The popular SMIL+HTML5 digital signage middleware platform will soon migrate from ARM-based CPUs to Intel’s latest entry-level digital signage platform
September 25, 2014, Shanghai, China – IAdea, digital signage and smart retail technology vendor, is announcing that it will be making its popular implementation of the SMIL+HTML5 standards available on hardware based on Intel® x86 architecture. The platform, demonstrated today jointly with Intel at the Digital Signage Shanghai Show, will be used by many digital signage content management system (CMS) vendors as their preferred way to quickly extend their Windows-based software to Android. The platform standards will be backed by standards groups including the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and POPAI.
The Intel® Reference Design for Digital Signage (EL-10) as the basis of IAdea’s Android Middleware for entry level affordable Digital Signage will help enable innovative, turnkey digital signage solutions,“ notes Intel’s Jose Avalos, Worldwide Director Visual Retail and Digital Signage “Intel remains committed to enabling a rich digital signage ecosystem that assures all software runs best on Intel architecture.”
The SMIL+HTML5 open platform provided a standards-based environment for dozens of CMS vendors to expand beyond the “Wintel” platform. IAdea’s implementation includes a modified Android system kernel to compensate for stability problems often found in the standard Android open source project. As a result, it is one of the most popular platform choice and has been used in several multi-thousand-unit retail deployments.
“This solution answers a huge need from the Android community. While ARM-based CPUs provide a low-cost alternative, they have not always delivered the performance expected of digital signage hardware,” said Rex Chen, Executive Vice President of IAdea. “We are pleased to be a part of Intel’s effort to embrace Android for retail applications. IAdea will soon enable our large number of CMS and OEM partners to take advantage of Intel’s latest silicon.”
Intel® Reference Design for Digital Signage (EL-10) enables the first Intel x86 implementation of IAdea’s middleware. Used in conjunction with the robust middleware, the Intel architecture may provide superior performance at a given price point. Following IAdea’s announcement, dozens of CMS’s supporting the SMIL+HTML5 platform will soon be able to take advantage of Intel’s new hardware.
IAdea is planning to make further announcements throughout the early part of 2015 to unveil advanced retail-focused products and digital signage features as they become available. For further information or to stay informed, contact IAdea via //www.iadea.com.
